Rediscovering Viking Maritime Routes
Over three years, Swedish archaeologist Greer Jarrett retraced the maritime paths of the Vikings, sailing more than 3,000 miles along Norway’s coast in a traditional Viking-style faering boat. His expedition aimed to uncover lesser-known Viking harbors that played vital roles in navigation and trade.
Uncovering Unknown Viking Harbors
Through hands-on sailing, interviews with local mariners, and digital mapping of ancient coastlines, Jarrett identified four previously unknown harbors on small islands and peninsulas. This suggests Vikings operated a decentralized network of ports facilitating extensive trade and communication.

Sailing in a replica faering presented real challenges similar to those faced by Viking sailors centuries ago. The open, square-rigged clinker boat was adept at open water but difficult to maneuver near land due to strong currents and winds.

On one occasion, when the mast spar broke 15 miles offshore, the crew improvised by lashing two oars to hold the sail, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability essential to Viking voyages.

Jarrett’s voyage highlighted the advanced shipbuilding skills of the Vikings, as the faering’s stability without a deep keel was remarkable. Crew cooperation and morale proved critical, shedding light on the social dynamics aboard Viking vessels.
